Kamen Rider Zero-One

Post by Windblade » Fri Nov 03, 2023 2:52 am

Seems like this KR season was mentioned only once at this forum.

Image

Country: Japan
Genre: tokusatsu, science fiction, cyberpunk
Number of seasons: one season + 4 movies + 11 specials

Humagears, androids created by the leading company for A.I., Hiden Intelligence, serve humanity's every convenience. But a cyber-terrorist organization, Metsuboujinrai.net, begins hacking the Humagears in a conspiracy that turns them into monsters. Aruto Hiden has taken over at Hiden Intelligence, and along with the CEO's post, he also takes over the responsibility for Kamen Rider Zero-One by using his company's technology. Aruto tries to keep the peaceful world between humans and Humagears with his Humagear secretary, Izu, while A.I.M.S., a military squad, pursues the terrorists.

This show has a lot of androids, male and female (and at least one non-binary). Most prominent female android is Izu (Is), Aruto's secretary. Later she even transforms into Kamen Rider Zero-Two.

Izu and Aruto transform into Kamen Riders (Zero-Two and Zero-One): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihs7IjQnR7s

What I liked:
1. Acting is good. Noa Tsurushima, Izu's actress, plays an android very well. She moves like a robot, talks like a robot, shows almost no emotions, etc. Also she plays "evil" version of Izu - Azu (As).
2. Some "real" robot content: hacking scenes (first story arc has a lot of them), small malfunctions (software glitches), shutdowns, scenes with robot vision, internal mechanisms (nothing too extreme), etc. Quite nicely done for a show for children. Androids in Zero-One look like androids (more or less) and behave like androids, though not always, unfortunately (and it's good, because in another KR season about robots - Kamen Rider Drive - androids in their human form looked and behaved absolutely like humans, though with one exception).
3. First story arc (episodes 1-16) is amazing. Just amazing. Others...are not so good, especially second one (see below).
4. Zero-One is the first KR season to have a female Rider (Kamen Rider Valkyrie) almost from the start (she transforms into a Kamen Rider in third episode). Unfortunately, this character was not developed enough, she even didn't get an upgraded form (her upgrade was planned, but it was cancelled because of covid pandemic; eventually she got her upgrade in one of post-final movies).
5. Good costumes (for example: Kamen Rider Jin in Burning Falcon form)

What I didn't like:
1. First version of Izu didn't have backups "by design". At all. Why? As an IT specialist, I was shocked and infuriated by this fact.
2. CGI is...well, it's not bad, but... Toei's shows always have problems with CGI; chromakey issues, low-polygonal models, lack of shading on models, etc.
3. Some storylines are boring. For example, a storyline about a job competition between androids and humans with smart glasses (something like Google Glass on steroids).
4. Some characters were not developed enough, one of them - Yua Yaiba / Kamen Rider Valkyrie - was even "downgraded" from Kamen Rider to something like monster of the week!

So... Still, Zero-One is one of my favourite KR seasons (others are Ex-Aid (my all-time favourite), Ryuki and Drive).

P.S. I wrote a big review for this show, but it's in Russian.

P.P.S. Sorry for my bad English, it's not my native language.

You can watch episodes 1-3 at Youtube:
01: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnfnnZZH6cQ
02: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sqL4He6m1s
03: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnLeutFiXIQ

If you're from the USA, you can watch the entire season at Amazon Prime Video or at Apple TV.

Also you can download this show with English subs at some torrent sites (I recommend Over-Time's subs).

If anybody is still interested: recently I've read Zero-One comic (published by Stonebot Comics), and unfortunately it has absolutely no interesting robot content. The comic itself is quite mediocre, and there are a lot of small graphic errors. The art in general is not bad; new villain's (his name is Ragnarok) design is nice.
