Cutting away the covering over the lower half of 1 leg does not eliminate doubt.

Anyone who has seen the Chinese company Exrobots videos where real girls pretend to be robots (very well) next to actual robots that are basically animated sex dolls in their big mad scientist lab/amusement park attraction...you may have noticed one of the girls seems to actually be a leg amputee, which they take advantage of to make her seem even more like a "real" robot woman.

There were additional videos that came out (numerous ones) that show in more detail the workings of the bot, etc. and even some situations with it walking around the office with no covering at all.

It does seem legit.

Now, the question is did they just make a bot that can walk somewhat* naturally...and that's it, or will it actually be useful in its general-purpose capacity. Can't really make a call there yet; it could be vaporware overall, but the walking and movement does seem to be legit.

Moreso than we can say for those embarrassing Tesla bots....

I am very hoping it is real, but unless all the videos are uncut, a single livestream? Then we can't believe anything was not switched, or at least edited. An actress in bandages doing the walk. Maybe even an amputee for an initial "cutaway" scene. (I assume most of us have also seen the recent clips of that wasp-waisted European girl in heavy makeup and a robot costume at some events in China. And many Chinese promoting it as if she is actually a miracle of Chinese android tech. She really does have an amazingly tiny waist, so much we might suspect she actually is a robot.)

The demo needs to be in front of live audience with multiple people with their own cameras. Or better yet, in front of Penn & Teller. Otherwise, it cannot be trusted.

They could have staged this 20 times and only released the case where there were no malfunctions. That's how almost all "Watch this amazing trick!" Youtube videos are done. Anyone can throw a ping pong ball over their shoulder into a mug with their eyes closed if they do it 178 times and only show the 1 success.

And of course, if this is a showcase, then there is no reason to show anything less than the best they have. There is every motivation to edit things to get investment money.

It's good to be skeptical, but you're comparing apples and oranges. Exrobot was a startup with probably fewer than ten people, while XPENG is a car manufacturer that sells over 200,000 cars a year and employs roughly 20,000 people, so probably more than 10,000 engineers.

Exrobot was obviously trying to generate buzz, while XPENG, although certainly not a massive car manufacturer like BYD, Geely, or MG, is growing rapidly and is aiming to join that trio within two or three years. They're not going to ruin their credibility by doing a big, fake presentation.

Thanks to all for proving me wrong.

Still, I can only be cautiously optimistic. Walking robots have been done long ago. Japan had HRP-4C about 15 years ago. ASIMO even earlier. Boston Dynamics today is way ahead of this. Still, it just seems a free-walking robot programmed to "sashay" like a woman to seem sexy. Still, knowing it's not part of that ExRobot scam is good to know.

Look forward to better. But for now, the TikToks of Chinese women acting like robots is far better content.
