What music to listen to when writing.

Post by CheeseMaker » Fri Nov 25, 2022 8:58 am

I've been trying to find some calm and relaxing music to listen to while I write. Anyone here have some recommendations?

For me, it absolutely must be something without lyrics...if im filling my own CPU with words, I can't have someone else singing words at me.

I also change music to fit the mood of what I'm writing. If its something action intensive, turn on the Doom sound track, or some action movie's score. If its something more romantic, smooth jazz...if its sexy, youd be surprised how often you can find porn music.

In general though, it'll be classical music, lofi musics of all kind, or video game soundtracks. Weirdly, the "Ecco the Dolphin" soundtrack in particular makes a regular appearance in my writing music selection. *shrug* no idea why, just love the music.

I usually don't listen to music while writing erotica. Most of the stuff I listen to would, for me at least, clash tonally with this sort of stuff. When writing other pieces of fiction or non-fiction I'll tend to pick something I think will encourage the right state of mind. In general, I listen to quite a bit of:
  • Dungeon Synth
  • Dark or Space Ambient
  • Movie/Video-Game OSTs
  • Classical
In no particular order of importance, along with a smattering from other genres like Metal and Classic Rock.

Yep - almost EVERYONE agrees that when it comes 2 straight AI, computers, robots, (neo-/retro-)futurism, science fiction, science fantasy, etc., :transformer: :faceoff: from a musical standpoint, it's usually ECM/EDM - aka electronic (dance) music - that gets the first turn @ bat these days, and then next come either heavy metal, rock music, classical music or jazz. As a TAMO-ASFR Freak myself, ECM/EDM is also at the Heart of what I listen to as well (Check out my diagram.), but one can also see I also enjoy listening to Disco, Funk, Techno Bass, Bluegrass, Zydeco, Blues, etc. My musical tastes are very wide ranging.

Yeah though, I would definitely suggest anything from HOS (Hearts Of Space With Stephen Hill), DI.FM, SoundCloud and/or BeatPort. :applause:

I usually listen to metal (gothic, symphonic, progressive, power, doom, MDM, industrial and even trance), rock and industrial / EBM / dark electro when I'm writing stories.

Always instrumentals, partial to jazz and funk. Medeski Martin & Wood being my favorite.

I do love a good film score though, and Trent Reznor / Atticus Ross do a fine job.

Two Seconds To Hell/Thomas Bergerson - some is instrumental and some has vocals, so you can pick your poison. :)

Quite an eclectic collection; I had to resort a lot of it due to several tracks being from compilations and not the original albums, but there you go. Chase music, I go for stuff like Giorgio Moroder's "Chase" from Midnight Express, "Focus" from Hocus Pocus (the band, not the movie), or other fast-paced stuff. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of A.I. covers of songs in the style of Elvis Presley; there was one channel that had quite a few good ones, but it apparently got shut down, though I've found another channel that also does quite a good job. Also, never underestimate the creative value of wrestling entrance music.
