In Mac OS X, there is a menu option to produce an audio file from text.
The control to enable the option is rather well hidden.

Once activated, a drop-down menu becomes available.
"Add to iTunes as spoken track".

Selecting from the available accents and tempos is much more straightforward, in the Dictation and Speech panel. There is an initial set of voices, but you can download more with the customize option in the Speech tab, System voices menu.

Zarvox is still there, and Trinoids. No new novelty voices.
16 English-speaking female voices/accents (2 British, 9 American).
Perhaps your fembot was assembled in South Africa? (that would be "Tessa")

I was playing around with Google Translate the other day when I noticed that the vocalizer feature produces a nice sounding synthesized female voice. This got the mad scientist part of my brain working, and I came up with this:
