Re: How do I choose my story's conflict?
I feel there is a simple solution to this! You said you have your heroine all planned out, right? Then all you need to do is choose conflicts that will make her strengths AND weaknesses shine through. Choose a conflict that will emphasize your character's traits. That's a good starting point.

Re: How do I choose my story's conflict?
Like Rexx said, look to your main characters.
For me a story should involve some sort of growth of one or more characters; they start at point A and through the events of the tale end up at point B. Maybe someone who has no confidence gains it. Maybe someone who's a pain in the ass learns to be a bit more friendly.
So once you have your growth path, then a story can be more easily generated around that path.

Re: How do I choose my story's conflict?
My general idea: circle around the figures and let them do all the thinking. I don't have an idea of a "conflict" I put them into - that would just feel like a cruel psychological experiment to me - but place obstacles in their way like a dungeon keeper, and like reality would do. The conflicts arise automatically when a person has to choose her/his way through the dungeon/reality.

Re: How do I choose my story's conflict?
Good ideas, all around. I can't think of a specific conflict, but sometimes living life is its own conflict, you know? Protecting your secret is one thing, but just living can be enough to challenge humans and androids alike. The more pressure you put on a situation, the more conflict or suspense will show. Also, letting strengths AND weaknesses show through is a very sage piece of advice; without it, you have almost a perfect character, and even though some people like that, I'm not one of them. It's like a Mary-Sue or something, harmed by nothing and you know she'll make it through without much strain and not really learn anything in the process. Those are my thoughts.
