Fems of FembotCentral (and a limited subset of the gents), I have a favor to ask.
I've received multiple private massages to the effect of "this is our 50 Shades of Grey." Having virtually no awareness of 50 Shades other than "it's a popular book, probably a romance, and it's a bit racy," I assumed these comments were merely communicating the fact that Virus Alert seems to resonate so well with the specific tastes of those who made the comparison. I then proceeded on the assumption that Virus Alert, regardless of how well-received it may be here, would be thoroughly unpublishable for virtually any market.
This morning, I just read the Wikipedia synopsis of 50 Shades. Not only did it raise awkward questions regarding some of my female friends and family members who are fans of it (and a few males as well, but that's surprising in a completely different way), it made me realize that maybe Virus Alert wouldn't be nearly so controversial as I first thought.
So, the questions here are, between Virus Alert and 50 Shades:
1) Which is more sexually explicit?
2) Which places greater emphasis on male domination over female characters?
3) Which places greater emphasis on self-objectifying women? (eg "I've been bad" type statements)
4) Which presents a higher frequency of sexual content versus story content?
5) Which uses more insulting terms (Whore, slut, etc.) - both in terms of quantity and severity of the insult?
6) Which is broken into more self-contained chapters?
Please note, I'm only asking for comparative measurements in terms of abstract measurements and analysis. I'm not fishing for compliments (although feedback of any kind is welcome, in the right time and place).
I realize that I may be casting my net a bit narrowly here, seeing as I'm primarily looking for feedback from people who have read both 50 Shades and Virus Alert, and who are willing to describe the above metrics. The questions are open to males as well, assuming they have some degree of firsthand experience with 50 Shades.
