Re: Giant Facepalm
Go for it! The more the merrier. There's been a steady outpouring of content over the past year, but very little of it appeals to every single visitor across the board.
Also - welcome to the weird world of creating. I looked back at the couple of stories I did manage to push publish on here... And I don't even remember writing half of it. I can't even drum up the mindset I was in to put those words together. It's part of the magic of being an artist. Your past work is always a strange remnant of who you've become.

Re: Giant Facepalm
Once in a while somebody asks me "Why don't you write another story ?"
DID YOU EVEN READ THAT DRECK ????!!!!
When I try to reread them I don't even get past the first sentence.

Re: Giant Facepalm
I would re-write and rehash them. I did the same thing with some of my old stories, because I learned a lot since when I first wrote them...they ended up much better than the original product.Kishin wrote:So I found some of my old stories (not the complete catalog by far) and read back over one. Oh God...Did I really write that?
I feel almost a profound sense of embarassment at it.
So the question popped into my head: Re-write and rehash old stuff in a new, more up to date way?
thoughts?

Kishin,
I think you should use dictation software like mine, and translate your old stories into non-suck English. I see you as Mark Twain, narrating the story of a fool who told his tale to you.
No, seriously, That's probably not a very good idea; but it would shake up your process. I think that's what you really need. Or you could print out the stories and cut them up along the lines into sentence fragments and stick them back together like you're a Dadaist in Paris in the 1920s.

Typical artist behaviour. Congrats.Rotwang wrote:Once in a while somebody asks me "Why don't you write another story ?"

No, you should write again, too. I vaguely remember reading your Dreck and it was fun back then. With my tastes changing it isn't anymore, but then you obviously feel the same and this leads me to the conclusion you can do something different now which again excites me.
Same for Kishin. Nova was fun back then. Now it's really hard to miss the jerky pacing and the "enthralling" narrative style. But even back then I've felt being clutched by the narrator more than by Nova; I always thought this was on purpose but I'm not sure anymore.

Re: Giant Facepalm
Been there. I've written stuff I had published when I was starting out... geeze it wasn't bad, but it was far from good!

Re: Giant Facepalm
The first thing that any author will tell you is that they rarely have pride in their first work. It is also pretty rare for their first stuff to be considered good. It takes a while for a writer to get into the groove of what they are writing-- even one with experience needs to get a feel or the characters they create and what not. So it isn't all that surprising that you see your earlier works that way. Goodness knows that my first writing attempts were awful, but I'd like to think I've become a better writer for the experience it provided.
That said, I don't know if a re-write of these earlier stories is something you want to try. I think it might be better to look back on them and maybe take a few ideas you liked and refined them a bit more to create something new.

"If the time should ever come when what is now called science, thus familiarized to men, shall be ready to put on, as it were, a form of flesh and blood, the Poet will lend his divine spirit to aid the transfiguration, and will welcome the Being thus produced, as a dear and genuine inmate of the household of man."

I love your stories. My gripe is that so many of them go unfinished.

If I had to choose just one, it would be " Killers (Knights) Hiding Among Our Slaves". Cause Nova was left in such a precarious situation there.Kishin wrote:That would be my gripe as well Zerodin.
