I have ambivalent feelings about this.smalk wrote:Found today on sinfest.net. Deep as ever.

What is a robot? A computer-controlled machine which performs tasks traditionally performed by humans.
Why build robots if humans exist in abundance? To perform tasks which are too difficult or unpleasant for humans to perform. To do the things humans don't want to do.
What is a fembot? A robot, in the form of a woman, or possessing female characteristics, which performs tasks traditionally performed by human females.
Why build fembots if human females exist in abundance? To perform tasks which are too difficult or unpleasant for human females to perform. To do the things women don't want to do.
Slick (Sinfest's primary male character) is, quite literally, a thing women don't want to do.
Is he evil for admiring women? I doubt even the staunchest feminist would make such an argument.
Is he evil for craving female companionship? Social interaction is a basic human need, and it's not unreasonable to want to share the company of those you admire.
Is he evil for desiring sexual gratification? This might spark some legitimate debate, but it tends to boil down to the Church's view (based on a very narrow interpretation of a single bible verse) versus almost everyone else's.
Slick is attempting to fulfill some basic human desires, for once without pestering or annoying a human woman, and his reward is to be essentially told "you don't even deserve that."
I dislike this view.

I saw an un-attractive old man driving a Ferrari and an un-attractive older woman driving a Lotus this weekend. I suppose neither of them deserve those cars but do deserve each other, eh? It seems that society is hell bent on forcing "reality" on all our psyches. I'll go watch some "reality" TV and let the superficial priorities and values help me give a damn about the lives of useless strangers (as long as they are attractive, of course).

Really? I saw it the way Slick wants to prove the girl is real - and she is, thanks to his unintended help - but real girls do what they want, not what men want. That's nice.WilloWisp wrote: Slick is attempting to fulfill some basic human desires, for once without pestering or annoying a human woman, and his reward is to be essentially told "you don't even deserve that."

I see it as soon the girl became real, BYE! Meaning, sadly, she was only staying with him because she had too. The minute she had free will, she ran out of him.
Women will see this as a good thing.. the woman is free! Yay! I don't need a man to tie me down and tell me what to do!
Men will see negativity as the man spent his money on her, hoping for some real companionship and love in return, and the moment she could, she ran off on him, not even saying a single thank you. Typical (L).
I see as a sad but realistic view on most men and women in today's society. Romance is died!

Once and for all, I wish we could see a distinction between those men and women who believe - with reason - that they are fundamentally undesirable, vs. those who have a fair shot at a human pairing.
Some folks are unambiguously hot, and some clearly not.
There will be a grey area (probably divided into a number of shades),
so there will be an American Idol-style "Hot enough or Not enough" panel, to help people know where they stand.
Churches, other traditionalist groups can make a more targeted appeal to those who maybe really should still be giving dating a chance. Then they could leave more folks alone, where they don't even have a good argument for them to keep at it.
Slick lives in a weird world that capriciously punished him for enjoying his legal purchase.
Is a "reality zone" an "act of God"?
