Transfer of consciousness in media?

Post by jolshefsky » Wed Aug 25, 2021 12:38 pm

I was just thinking of one of our tropes—transferring a human consciousness to an android body—and couldn't think of any examples in media. There are examples of cyborgs (e.g. Robocop) where the human brain is retained, artificial intelligences (e.g. Ex Machina), [edit:] or duplicated bodies but no mind transfer (e.g. Stepford Wives 1976), but nothing where a mind is transferred to a robotic body. Any examples come to mind?

There was Chappie, though that happened at literally the last few seconds of the movie.

I did think of a couple: Robotrix (where a cop gets her consciousness transferred to a robotic duplicate after she's shot), and Amelia 2.0 (where a dying woman gets transferred to a robot body.) There's also a bit in Chrome Angels a.k.a. Cyborg Conquest where one of the bikers gets copied to a robot duplicate, but the duplicate is quickly destroyed. Robotrix is quite good overall for fembot content; Amelia 2.0 is too undergrad-level philosophical and lacking in decent F/X but an okay movie; fembot-content wise, there are some decent debugging scenes where her human consciousness crashes.

Well there is the "tin man" episode of stargate SG1 were the team gets their conciousness transfered to robot bodies only to find out that they're copies.

Some examples that I remember:

With fembots:

Pokemon Scarlet: professor Sada created an AI copy of herself; it was uploaded to an android body after her death (she was killed by a Pokemon from the distant past).

Lyubov-morkov: Vosstaniye mashin: movie's protagonists' consciousness is transferred to two robot guides' bodies (and robots' consciousness is transferred to protagonists' bodies).

Without fembots:

Pokemon Violet: professor Turo's story is almost the same as professor Sada's, but he was killed by a Pokemon from a distant future.

Kamen Rider Genms -Smart Brain and the 1000% Crisis-: Kuroto Dan's consciousness was digitized and uploaded to an android body (Kuroto is Kamen Rider Genm, ex-villain from Kamen Rider Ex-Aid).

You can also add The Outer Limits(the 90s version)episode Fallen Star, where a failing pop star was prevented from committing suicide by an ardent fan of hers from the future, who managed to occupy her body. Much later on, other time travelers(who occupied other bodies)find out that the fan's actions made their future time into a utopia via her music....but that said star was destined to die on that night. Another of the star's band mates also arrived on the scene, but the stress caused her to physically die. Seconds later, the star had her consciousness transferred into the band mate's body.
